Club Membership & Registration Process
St Ives Junior Australian Football Club is always keen to attract new members. The Club's sole purpose for existing is to provide a healthy sporting experience for our children. So we always welcome new parents and children.
According to age we have FOUR levels of player participation:
- The award winning AusKick program, St Ives has been elected best AusKick program on the North Shore in 2006 and 2008. AusKick caters for children up to 8 years.
- Juniors evenly selected teams for children from ages 9-12 playing in the Greater Sydney Junior - Sydney North competition.
- Youth graded teams for boys aged 13-16 playing in the Greater Sydney Junior competition.
- Youth can volunteer to umpire or assist and coach Juniors or AusKick. Note, "Green Shirts" are trainee umpires supported by fully accredited "Orange Shirts". Older youth or Adults can umpire Youth matches.
We ask ALL parents to participate in running this sporting experience your children, and abide with the Parent/Coach Code of Conduct.
St Ives Junior Australian Football Club is "managed by the community for the community" and we are all volunteers. You can help by for example:
- Coaching or managing a team.
- Being a ground manager, goal umpire, scribe, runner or boundary umpire.
- Do canteen shifts occasionally, helping with the annual Social Night.
- Join one of the teams of coordinators for Social, Football Operations, Canteen, Umpiring.
- Joining the Board to assist administration.
Obviously, we have lots of roles but sharing the work around makes everyone's role more manageable.
Enough about parents, back to the kids ....
Fun, Participation and Development are the key words in the operation of our teams. This, and the strong support of the Greater Sydney Juniors AFL, the body under which we compete, ensures our players are afforded equal opportunity to train and play our great game. This is a fundamental aspect of our Club's philosophy. In the Junior grades (Under 9 - Under 12) equal participation is mandatory. In the Youth grades (Under 13 - Under 16) there is a focus on development of skills. In the youth groups there is also a high focus on safety to ensure boys who are not physically developed are not exposed to over aggressive players in opposing teams.
Rules are set according to age and all of our coaches and umpires are accredited.
- Graduated Modified Rules apply to each age group to maximise safety and fun for players, broadly speaking bands of rules apply to AusKick, Under 9 & Under 10, Under 11 & Under 12, Under 13+.
- All coach and umpire volunteers are given formal training, support and mentoring to ensure competence and aiming for excellence at all levels. We ask all parents to appreciate their efforts and recognise it is a hard task and they are all club members.
Our Club is always looking to attract as many new players as possible because we think more (a) children playing sport is inherently good, (b) AFL is a great team sport and develops useful physical skills and (c) as more kids play we can better cater for all standards of ability. We do have responsibilities to our kids and the broader community so please note:
| Year of Birth | Age Group | Overall Group | Gender |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2003 - 2005 | AusKick | AusKick | Boys or Girls |

** Children turning 8 during the season may be offered the opportunity to play up in the under 9s during the season. However, this is based on team numbers and availability.
Note:
- "Playing Up" one year in juniors is normally acceptable but requires the approval of the Coaches and Juniors Coaching Coordinator based on skills and maturity.
- Where multiple teams are created in a Junior Age, evenly skilled teams will be selected by Coaches and Managers. Players will remain in allocated teams from about Round 5. Individual friendships will usually be accommodated but team balance will rank ahead of large friendship groups.
- St Ives usually enters Under 9 to Under 11 Teams in the GSJ North Shore competition but occasionally may enter teams in the North West.
- Under 12s and above play in graded Divisions. All players will have opportunity during the season in all grades according to merit and safety considerations.
Playing AFL is about making friends and learning to contribute to a team and parents are encouraged to embrace that spirit.
Observe Neighbouring Club Boundaries
St Ives is the home club for 22 primary and 6 secondary schools listed below. Families living in our area defined below (but in schools outside the area) are also given priority. Families living and attending schools outside our area are asked to contact their local team which they can identify from the Greater Sydney Juniors website.
We ask "out of area" families to contact their local club and give them a go. We support (and not compete with) our neighbouring clubs and we encourage everyone to develop their sense of community. Fore good reasons of maintaining balance St Ives doesn't aim to attract out of area players. St Ives is proud to exist solely for developing our kids and community, and occasionally we will win a premiership too.
